Virtual Weight Watchers

Crazy, some would say. - So because I need something to write update once Idol wraps tonight...

Now that I've kick started my eating habits of days gone by (at least by about 80%), I think I'm going to join OW's crusade here. I'll start next Wednesday.

It's Not Like Riding a Bicycle I Tell You

This morning marked my 3rd (2.5 really) round of golf since returning to the Midwest, where it is not a major feat to go play. I think that if I count all the times I played in NYC, it would be my 6th round in about 10 years. If I count Hawai'i, then that's 7. With my new clubs, that's probably round 4. And there are indeed still clubs in my bag from that fateful day in 1986 when I saved all my pennies and bought those super hot Lady Rams. Hell yes.

So it would seem to make sense that my game is a complete mess, right? New clubs (from 14 yr old girl clubs to oversized men's clubs), haven't played consistently in ages, blah blah blah. Well, let me tell you - it doesn't make the mess ANY MORE TOLERABLE. I want to pick up where I left off back in the mid-eighties. And I want it NOW!

I am amazed, however, that my attitude is generally (so far) that I want to be out there as often as humanly possible (which would explain our 6:15am tee time this morning, and the fact that I was not only on time but EARLY). There kinda really is nothing like popping your shoes into the trunk, exchanging them for your golf shoes, transferring your phone and wallet to your bag and heading off into the sunrise. Regardless of the fact that I sliced almost every shot I hit, as Dave says, there's [almost] no better way to start the day.

Day 8

I will admit, that yesterday, I had three crackers with brie on them.

Now, let me remind you, dear reader, that the point of this is not dieting, the point is to eliminate things from your diet to which you might be allergic. To cleanse the palette so that when you do have a reaction to something, it can speak through loud and clear.

I know I am allergic to dairy. I know my body doesn't like it. And I've been suspicious the past few months that it doesn't even really like soy substitutes. I think that with the pizza eating I've been doing for the past year that since I generally feel slightly "ew," that the pizza aftermath was just a mild additional "ew."

Well, there was nothing mild about the ass whooping my stomach gave me yesterday afternoon within an hour of downing a mere 3 knife-fulls of Brie. Let there be no mistake: Me + Dairy = no.

While I will (and do) find other places to get my fair share of calcium (I can't even LOOK at milk without wretching), don't get me wrong. This is not the end of pizza, the end of ice cream (Cold Stone Maui, I'll see you in January), nor the end of Mexican food. I think it's just clear that it's time (once this is over) to cut back and keep it real. Maybe, I dunno, listen to what my body is telling me?

The same thing may go for beer. At least Bud Light/Miller Lite/Coors Light and the like. If I'm not really going to enjoy the taste (the icy-est, coldest Newcastle), it's really not going to be worth putting that dreck in my body (for bloating and brain cell killing, etc.)

I've decided that I'm not going to do the full 28 days - at least not as outlined in the booklet. Mostly because it would require me to buy more of the powder stuff, and I'm just not into throwing another $50 towards this. The brie reaction yesterday was an indication that I've definitely done some clearing out, and the ramblings above are an indication that I've withdrawn enough to reset my thinking on what I put into my mouth. So once the powder runs out (which should be the end of this week), I think I'll stick to the elimination of all things bad (not all things potentially allergic, but all things bad) with exceptions for pure enjoyment, kick up the exercise, and star the weight loss part of my Time To Get It Together movement.

BTW: I've eaten about 100,000 fruits and vegetables today, and I think I may scream.

Softball Report 5.12.05

RT v. Momentum - by Dave Hart (AKA Coach)

As the sun beat down on skin-tight jerseys, sweat fueled the chicken spirit that is the RT softball team. They marched onto the field of battle, armed with all the essentials for a championship team: 5 gloves, 1 bat, 48 beers, 5 adoring fans and 1 huge pair of sunglasses.

In between sips of beer I saw not coworkers on that field, but a team that had come together with a single focus. Bats swung, runs were scored, the first recorded RT double-play was turned. Tim-may Red Pants was throwing darts from the mound, Liz rounded the bases at will in a blur of curly hair, and the coach was appropriately relegated to the bench.

However, as history has taught us, destiny cannot be fooled. Momentum shifted in a flash producing last-inning runs to move ahead of the brave chicken chested warriors. RT watched in disbelief as the final run crossed home plate, assigning the 8-7 defeat and 0-1 record. There was no joy in Mudville that night, until the beers kicked in...than we were fine.

Until next week...

Coach

p.s. Tim and Tom don't like losing. You're all officially released from the team. We're hiring ringers.

Czajka Strikes Again

Another observation courtesy the famous Christopher Czajka:

The NYC tabloid headline writers have outdone themselves again.

Yesterday, a 100-year old retaining wall along the Henry Hudson Parkway
on the far Upper West Side of Manhattan gave way, sending about six tons
of dirt, rocks, grass, trees, and other assorted debris into the
roadway. No one was injured, but the road--a major artery into and out
of the city--is closed as they try to remove the avalanche.

And my favorite tabby headline of the day today comes from New York
Newsday. It reads:

"West Slide Story"

Teee heee hee.

A year ago, part of Riverside Drive collapsing onto the Henry Hudson would have sent my commute into a tailspin. Not because I go that way every day, but because some of the people who do would be trying to go the way I do. And when I was out late at night my cab would definitely go that way. Through the city surely adds another $10.

Ugh. I hope no one is hurt.

Day 4

Feelin' much better than I did yesterday or the day before. Haven't been back to the scale since Wed morning when I was -2. Last night I must admit to having a small half a half glass of wine. Honestly it made me feel kinda weird and it took me an hour to drink it. I made a version of Chili that's allowed, and it was actually pretty good.

Off to play softball. Guess I'll grab an apple. Of course we get free beer while playing, and I'm not allowed.

Volleyball

Monday night I started playing volleyball again. In NYC, I played for about 6 years straight, all year round. I haven't played since then, but it's kinda like a bike? Though I haven't ridden a bike in about 10 years...

Regardless, I have to once again give the Midwest props. In NYC, games were held in HS gyms, some nicer than others, all over the city, on floating nights of the week. This league is organized by night of the week, and is played in the same complex every time. And, in true acceptance of the fact that these leagues are pretty much an excuse to drink beer, there is a BAR and grill IN THE COMPLEX. Like, you can drink beer and watch the teams play.

Not that I'm drinking beer this month.

Day 2

I feel like I was out drinking last night. Like, slightly headachey, slightly naseous. Food does not sound appetizing. I think that the black bean/ground turkey concoction I made up did not sit well. And I think my body is in a little shock, not getting ANY bad stuff yesterday. I thought it wouldn't be that big of a change, but when you really think about it, I guess I _do_ eat at least a bit of crap every day.

Not craving anything... yet...

Detox Begins

I just spent the past 6 hours cooking for the week ahead. The time has come, the time is now (Marvin K. Mooney, Will You Please Go Now) for me to get my butt in gear. I did this program in the fall of 2001, and it rocked and lead the way to me losing 30 lbs. The eating habits I change stayed with my for a good year or so after the "program" was complete, and I really felt good. The past couple years I've totally not been eating well, and not only do the clothes I bought back then no longer fit, but I just don't feel as good.

So, tomorrow I start the 28-day detox. And oh the things I've been eating ever since I ordered the powder stuff on Tuesday. Pizza, hot dogs, ice cream, pasta, beer - knowing that I would say goodbye to them - some of them, possibly, forever.

Following are some of the things I am not allowed for the next 28 days
- Anything w/ refined sugar (white, brown), corn syrup, honey
- Citrus
- Corn
- Anything w/ wheat, rye or gluten
- Anything soy
- Peanuts
- Red meat, cold cuts, eggs, shellfish
- Any dairy
- Any butter type product
- Soda, alcohol, coffee, tea (w/ caffeine)
- Chocolate, ketchup, mustard, bbq sauce, soy sauce, etc.

Exactly.

Oh, and Dinner Club trip to Fast Eddie's Bon Air and my company's annual golf outing will both fall within my 28 days. F. Y. Friggin' I.

Last time we started at 178, this time we start at 166. Ready . . . GO!

11 Runs in the 1st

Absolute madness! The Cards came out of the gate today with an 11 run 1st inning. The final score was 15-5. Hi. They could have spread JUST the points from today out over the course of the series and have won the other 3 games. Lame.

Happy Mother's Day Moms!!! (My mom was invited to the game, but didn't want to go :))

It Was Hot. It Made Me Tired

I was so beat by 3 hours in the sun. Just like the Cards were so beat by the Pads - AGAIN. But it was worth it, because I got to debut 1 of my new T's. Can't say that one person in the park got it, but I wore it proud!
