If The Ride is More Fly, Then You Must Buy
Riddle me why Snoop Dog's new Chrysler commercial is as funny as it is. The whole fashizzle thing is like, what &mdash at least 5 years old? Aren't advertising creative teams supposed to be up on the latest? Cutting edge? This commercial is so 2000 - no, I'm almost sure more like 1997 — yet my Dad is obsessed. I even laugh every time I see it. More support for the fact that things take about 5 years to hit the mainstream - though I could have sworn the whole "izzle" thing already hit the mainstream and gone the other way — is this a third wave? So I guess props to the creative team for knowing that something so 1997 that has already been played could still be funny and knowing how to make it so?
I'm still confused.
In other news, the wild animals outside are going insane. As I sit here, there are bird flying willy nilly and squirrels acting insane. Something wicked this way comes?

Hi, my name is Larry...
I was just reminded of Larry, Darryl and Darryl.
That, my friends, was comedy.

Holy Six Feet Under, Batman
**Potential Spoilers**
Wow.
A. I can't believe that the show is over. Really truly, on Saturday, I was thinkg, "I'd love to take the folks who write/produce/concept for HBO out for a drink." Not to be a hanger on and drool over them, but literally just buy them a drink and be like, "hey, thanks for making some damn good though provoking television and having the balls to air it." Because, I mean, damn.
B. I am still recovering. And at the same time, kinda hope I never do. The end of the show left me with such overwhelming emotion that I could barely stand it. I just kept saying (through tears) that it made me feel like it's all just so BIG. Everything that seems trivial, is not so much at all - like, it may be to an outsider, but to us and those close to us, it's what makes up a life. It's what goes between the Born - Died dates - and there's so much there. And so much we continuously take for granted. Everyday and all the time. Also things we hold onto - SO tightly. We spend so much energy trying to keep things the same, and they just can't be. Won't be. To have been so immersed in these characters for 6 (?) seasons, and seeing the "rest of their lives" go by at the end really hit home that there is always so much more ahead - until, of course, there's no more ahead. What has us in a ball on the floor for a week may be nothing more than a "blip" between the Born - Died, while, and at the same time, someone or something that we initially dismiss can end up being a major part of that journey.
C. or Summation. Do not fuck around. This is it. Learn and cherish, but don't hold on because as it was perfectly put "you cannot take a picture of this moment, it's already gone."
Ugh.
As Sally Sodaro once said "you guys, we have so much to do!"
So much indeed. Today, it is overwhelming me as much as it is inspiring me, but I know that soon it will turn into pure motivation, joy and love.
ps - good thing this is National Punctuation Day and I just stunk up the room.
pps - if the 6 Feet Under Finale did this to me, what will happen with the Rent movie comes out??? What I ask???

My dad just went off on Fear Factor, and I have to say it was the funniest thing I've seen in weeks. I can't really do it justice here in writing, but if you see me, ask me to immitate it. It involves repeating the name of every disguting labeled substance they were about to have the contestant eat, cursing, and at the same time, for unknown reason, being physically unable to change the channel quickly enough.
It will kill you.

So Confused
Farrah Fawcett is on Davis Letterman right now... and... didn't her face used to move? Did she used to interview as though she was actually in the room? Is she insane and I missed it (congrats to me)?

Baby Girl from VA
Somebody please tell me they saw this. Amalia Crosby (I think that's what Mo'Nique just said) and 5 back-up girls who are all 10 just did a Missy style performance for the Apollo Jr. performance. I can't even really do it justice in writing, which is why I'm just hoping someone else saw this.
Especially Dwayne Mann.

Backdating Madness
Wednesday night after dinner, Cameron and I met some of his coworkers for $.50 bowling in Clayton (if you know the insanity of that sentence, then you know - can't really break it down). We proceeded to bowl not 1, not 2, not 3, but SIX games. At this moment, 3 days later, my right wrist, elbow and shoulder are, well, killing me. It was well worth it though, we had a blast (even though I started out with a way too heavy ball and scored progressively horribly over the course of the evening).
Despite that, I just cought up on blogging for the past week. See links below.
7/31 - Karyn's back!
8/5 - Highway wrongness
8/6 - Fairmont Park
8/11 - Neruda/Erato
8/12 - see below.
I also upgraded to Tiger (grrrrr) today. So far not noticing a difference, but I haven't really explored yet.
My dad and I saw The Skeleton Key this afternoon. I thought it was pretty good. I half guessed what was going on about halfway through, but remained thwarted in the end. and Kate Hudson is just hot. Period.
My mom's out of town again, and Mouse (my cat from college that came to live here when Dan Lipton's mom informed me that he doesn't like cats - my mom thanks you, Fran) is losing his ever loving mind. Every few hours, he cries as though someone is standing on his tail. He does this every time she's gone for longer than a day. And then when she gets back, Mouse will follow her EVERYWHERE. Like a dog. A dog on crack even.
Don't forget about Showtime at the Apollo, y'all. Just don't. Two people just got "whop whop"ed.

Morton's, Who Knew?
Friday, at Morton's, from 5-7, FREE kick-ass steak sandwiches, and $4 vodka drinks. Hell yes. Sheridan and Tom kicked it off, and Perscilla and her co-worker Steve quickly joined, and eventually Perscilla's husband Marcus and the KAryn and Chad rounded out the crowd. In keeping with our discount theme, we headed to Hoosierhan's (Houlihan's) in Galleria where appetizers are half prize in the bar area, like forever. One of the bills we got was for $8, and I'm still not quite sure how it all went down.
Eventually, it became clear that everyone at the table spoke at least two languages fluently, and I pretented to be exhausted to end my inferiority complex. Just kidding about the pretending thing. I was beat.

99 Bottles of Wine on the Wall
I continue to say that Neruda is the best bar in town. It's only b/c of acoustics that it beats Erato (that Erato has poor acoustics, not that they are extraordinary at Neruda). The only thing I would change about Neruda is the smoking. That Erato has over Neruda in spades. While both have great wine lists, Erato wins there two - however, they both serve Newcastle. Neruda is also a bit more "homey" than Erato, but I think that's part of Erat's charm - the hard wood and sleekness - if hard wood and sleekness can emit charm. Regardless, I like the both, a lot.
Last night, after splitting a bottle of wine with Em, I started thinking about how fun it would be to have an old school, NYC style sing-along cabaret piano night at someplace like Neruda. So I emailed the owner. I'll keep you posted. Because I know everyone's just as excited as I am. Long live the piano bar and group 5 part "Tonight."

Walk Him Up
Thank the Lord above, The musical Purlie (which I keep trying to type Purplie) is being revived in hopes of an eventual Broadway run by Pasadena Playhouse and The Goodman Theatre. On hearing that Loretta Divine was in the Pasadena cast, and in general thinking about the prospect of seeing a really good production live on stage, I just said (over IM to Michael Shattner):
eXACtly
if she [Loretta Divine] comes with it [to Chicago]
which I hope to god she does
I may not be able to sit through the show
I may have to tie my hands
to keep from throwing things at the stage
namely, my shoe
That is all.

Every 19 Minutes
Tonight, after our family reunion picnic Cameron introduced me to the world of horse racing. On my first bet, I won $3.90!! I then proceeded to lose I don't know how much. But I came pretty close on what would have been pretty good payouts. Kira and Aaron joined us, and much to our surprise, Rudy Wilson and Dr. Wethers were there as well. It was hot, but all in all a fun night.
