Hmm, well, maybe NOT.
My parents must watch the cbs 10pm news, because it's like coming home to experience that 10:35 moment where you think they're going to leave on Letterman, but sure enough they switch to nbc for Jay Leno. Jay Leno who I an barely stand to look at. Jay Leno whose jokes I feel guilty giving a laugh. Jay Leno whose show I always want to turn DOWN and as soon as my dad heads off to bed I turn off. Jay Leno who when I hear my parents howling with laughter from their bedroom at I cringe and think, "ugh."
There's always the glimmer of hope that my dad will remain asleep upright in his chair and let cbs continue to the masterpiece that is David Letterman. The quirky, the intelligent, the consistently random and hilarious, David Letterman.
But it's been years since I've laid eyes on Letterman. Always, it's Leno.
Well, tonight, the stars aligned. My dad stayed asleep upright in his chair and did not change the channel. And Letterman started. Like, fully. I kept glancing over to my dad, holding my breath, hoping he wouldn't awake. And Letterman started his monologue. And it was, well, completely lame. Not timely at all (well, maybe indirectly), hardly funny, and yes, I'll say it, NOT FUNNY. And then I was reminded how much I want to kick Paul Schaffer into the nearest fan. I thought maybe it was just a bad opening monologue. Then Paul did an annoying playoff to the desk. And Letterman was at the desk and still... not funny... I found myself wondering what Jay Leno was ribbing on in his monologue. How cute Kevin Eubanks looked tonight... What intelligent music reference he was going to chime in... if I was missing man on the street interviews...
I finished my I-so-didn't-need-it-but-it-was-a-sign-that-I-was-the-last-car-to-make-it-through-the-dairy-queen-drive-through-before-they-closed Peanut Buster Parfait (Cameron, shhhh!), I got up, and said "Goodnight" loud enough to wake my dad. I said "you must be really asleep to not have switched to Leno." He agreed.
What does this mean that I no longer think David Letterman is funny? And I don't know which is worse - to think Letterman unfunny, or to PREFER Leno???? ugh.

I always preferred Letterman, although I must say I really don't watch him too much these days. Leno? However? I freaking can't stand. He makes me miserable and yearn for sweet death. He's among my top-five hated celebrities. Kevin Eubanks is cool, and I dig him on I Love the 90s, and I'm certain I prefer him to Paul Schaffer, but really. Leno? What a spineless, arrogant, unfunny chub.
