Don't go blamin' the spoilers

As of late, I'm on a rant about personal responsibility. Oh wait, that's not new. So perhaps I should rephrase that.

As of late, I'm on a personal responsibility rant about information consumption. It is not someone else's fault if you read something. Last time I checked, you can't be forced to read something. Right? I mean, barring extreme circumstances, reading is a free will exercise. Even when you have an assignment in school, you can choose NOT to read it.

This is a rant that bubbles up for me every once and a while, but lately it's been exacerbated by the Harry Potter hubbub. Everyone's whining and complaining about spoilers. I, who consumes more media than most I know, bought the book the day after it came out, and was unable to finish it until last weekend. The end was not spoiled for me. Why? Because I avoided media where I might have it spoiled. SIMPLE.

Though, as I'm reading the E-Weekly dedicated to Harry Potter that I put aside until I'd finished the book b/c HELLO, there's a little insert with some guy ranting about people who posted spoilers. And I just don't GET IT. This seems to not be logical to me. Spoilers only spoil if people CHOOSE TO READ THEM. What are the odds that someone in a Harry Potter chat room or bbs is going to spout something to ruin the plot for me? What are the odds that if I hear a tease for a Harry Potter conversation on the radio that something will be slipped? What are the odds that the Entertainment Tonight coverage on Harry Potter might tell me something I don't want to know? HIGH HIGH HIGH! I don't need a "spoiler alert" message, I just need to know the subject matter to know that if I want to be sure not to have anything ruined, I need to NOT CONSUME THAT MEDIA.

Jeez.
