Obama Campaign's Katrina Tribute

Well produced. Crazy when a top notch media team is a must for an effective campaign.

Some questions

Why why why with the pants down below the butt?

Why is red wine just so much more reliable than white?

Why do grown people insist on dressing like 20-something?

Am I occasionally one of them?

Goodnight.

Meet my46

The following videos were put together by the creative services team here at my46 for our first Roberts Broadcasting Sales Conference, held last week. Each station (St. Louis, Jackson, Columbia and Evansville) was charged with putting together a video by which to introduce their station to the others.

This, was ours.

Pull 'em up

Much along the same lines as the now infamous 106 & Park rap cartoon video (see below*), I often think as I drive down Kingshighway from 70 in the morning that I want a T-shirt that says: Pull up your F-ing PANTS.

That is all.

* profanity. A lot of it

The magic of James and Saundra

Those who know about James and Saundra know about the magic of James and Saundra. But truly? Do you know about the magic of James and Saundra?

Yesterday, James and Saundra celebrated 40 years of marriage. That's a lot.

My initial plan was to tell the story of James and Saundra here. But as I went to type it, it was clear that I'd never - ever - be able to capture it in its purity. Really, what I must implore you to do is to get James to tell it. I'm debating whether or not it's best told with Saundra nearby or not, but I think that should you have the chance to hear it from James, you should go for it, regardless.

That, is your challenge, should you choose to accept it. I understand that this may take many of you years and years. It will be worth the journey, I guarantee. If you can get James to play Wack-A-Mole, Skee-ball or sing along to Dancing Queen along the way, then extra bonus to you.

My friends rock

Really, the secret to anything I may do that might seem in the slightest bit impressive is my friends. My awesome, incredible, ever impressive and always doing something amazing, friends.

Last night, I got an email from Jason had been on Arthur Frommer's travel show discussing Disney World. Not only did Tom call in live on the air and reference the trip we all took in '04, Jason totally caught on it was him and used a special key word to let him know he knew.

That's brilliance. I love it.

Additionally, my friend Callista just arrived in Liberia, where her boyfriend Peter will take part in chipping away at the work that needs to be done there. They are keeping a blog on the experience - please bookmark it and check in to be reminded just how good we have it.

And just when I think I'm just stopping by to see what's up, Allan Harris hits me with some deep-ass thoughts on his blog.

There's a lot to do in this world. And I'm pretty sure I have a front row seat.

I love my friends.

Just to prove a point

Today I went in search of a business contact. While my personal address book yielded the most results, I will note that Facebook yielded more than LinkedIn. In fact, LinkedIn, in the exact scenario it's developed for, yielded ZERO leads. Thanks for playing.

Don't call it a comeback!

Is it me, or is LinkedIn making a mad crazy comeback in the last month?

I've been a member (thanks to one Miss Kay Daly, girl reporter) of LinkedIn since early 2004. It seemed to make sense in concept, and according to my archived invites to people to join, I think I've actually been involved in some offline hooking up of jobs on its behalf. In my mind, it's never really taken off because of all of the types of networking, job recommendations are most sacred. It's one thing to recommend a hair dresser - if it doesn't work out, hair grows back. Blind dates? No problem. But to directly or indirectly recommend someone for a job - that can come directly back to haunt your very own career.

But lately, I've been getting emails daily from folks to "connect on LinkedIn." I have to hypothesize that this is mostly due to the huge Facebook craze, and the media's misinformed (ok, maybe watered down, but still) constant usage of the two websites in the same category.

Regardless, interesting that it's suddenly exploded some 3.5 years later. We'll see if the site suddenly becomes more useful with the influx of membership. The reasons I can't see it ever truly being what it claims to be:

- People lie and embellish.
- The "recommendation" feature is parallel to the testimonial/comments feature on Friendster, and similarly, when someone writes one for you, you should write one in return. Only, I can't think of anything less reliable than a reference borne out of obligation.
- Like any online job site, current co-workers and employers can see your status. So if you are truly in need of a job search tool and it's on the DL, you can't make that known without everyone knowing. Yes, you could exclude your co-workers from your connection list, but you never know who on your list knows someone you work with. If it's on the web it's out.

The reasons I think Facebook actually does a better job of what LinkedIn is supposed to do:

- You never know where your next opportunity is going to come from. But I assure you that your chances are best when your network is engaged. Facebook's tools allow you to stay passively or actively involved with people you know on a purely social (non-threatening, non-blatantly about get me a job) level on a regular basis. As for people whose job prospects are thwarted by photos of them doing kegstands on their Facebook page? Don't get me started again about personal responsibility...

Don't go blamin' the spoilers

As of late, I'm on a rant about personal responsibility. Oh wait, that's not new. So perhaps I should rephrase that.

As of late, I'm on a personal responsibility rant about information consumption. It is not someone else's fault if you read something. Last time I checked, you can't be forced to read something. Right? I mean, barring extreme circumstances, reading is a free will exercise. Even when you have an assignment in school, you can choose NOT to read it.

This is a rant that bubbles up for me every once and a while, but lately it's been exacerbated by the Harry Potter hubbub. Everyone's whining and complaining about spoilers. I, who consumes more media than most I know, bought the book the day after it came out, and was unable to finish it until last weekend. The end was not spoiled for me. Why? Because I avoided media where I might have it spoiled. SIMPLE.

Though, as I'm reading the E-Weekly dedicated to Harry Potter that I put aside until I'd finished the book b/c HELLO, there's a little insert with some guy ranting about people who posted spoilers. And I just don't GET IT. This seems to not be logical to me. Spoilers only spoil if people CHOOSE TO READ THEM. What are the odds that someone in a Harry Potter chat room or bbs is going to spout something to ruin the plot for me? What are the odds that if I hear a tease for a Harry Potter conversation on the radio that something will be slipped? What are the odds that the Entertainment Tonight coverage on Harry Potter might tell me something I don't want to know? HIGH HIGH HIGH! I don't need a "spoiler alert" message, I just need to know the subject matter to know that if I want to be sure not to have anything ruined, I need to NOT CONSUME THAT MEDIA.

Jeez.
