Progress-ish

Wow. In the CNN exit polls (I know, I know), 39% of the white vote in Georgia went to Obama.

Thirty-nine percent of white people polled on their way out of the voting booths in GEORGIA voted for a BLACK MAN.

I find that shocking. Encouraging. I mean, regardless of who wins, that's amazing, no?

Though I know my sister would be quick to tell me not to be fooled by false hope.

Even if he doesn't win, I think this campaign has had an effect we're going to see the ripple effects of for years. I hope...

Well, first of all, Atlanta's in Georgia and it's a big, liberal city. And there is the big college town of Athens as well. New South and all that. Secondly, you have to remember it's 39% of the white *Democrat* vote. There are plenty of backwards bigoted Republicans that would never vote for a biracial candidate OR a woman. Or John Edwards, for that matter.

Obviously, there are plenty of forward-thinking unracist Republicans as well, who aren't voting for either for entirely different reasons.
